Pandora has directly resulted in my purchase of the following CDs in the last week! Tegan and Sara, The Con Michelle Branch, Hotel Paper Ben Folds, Ben Folds Live Cowboy Junkies, at the end of paths taken Lisa Loeb, The Very Best of Lisa Loeb Fall Out Boy, Take This To Your Grave So I'm listening to some of what I used to listen to way back when, as well as listening to brand new music again. I've also noticed that quite a number of CDs I own aren't in my iPod. Not sure why that would be, but I have started going through my CD collection to rip them again. In some cases, these are CDs I've owned for 18 years, like The Smithereens 11 , a band I've seen at least three times in concert. I don't ever see me going to downloadable digital music. I have downloaded a couple of things that I couldn't otherwise get on CD, such as the Aimee Man iTunes Originals performances. But while I was ripping a nearly 20 year old CD last night, I thought about the number of computers I have used over the years, and I am fairly certain if I had downloaded that music, I would either be doing without or buying it again. If you buy music from a download service, they don't allow you to redownload again later if your computer crashes. Computer files are still too ephemeral for me. I like the old physical medium, at least for now, and probably until the singularity comes.
